Is making and selling art Clay Silver (or PMC) pieces profitable?
I know that PMC is a bit expensive and the tools needed aren't cheap either.. so im curious, a question to the PMC artists there.. is it hard to profit from it or at least get your capital back?
While Metal Clay is more expensive than an equivalent amount of fine silver sheet or wire, it is possible to do quite a lot with it without investing in a lot of expensive tools. (It's hard to say the same for fabricating sheet metal.)
You can get started with very few tools and supplies, and then add more when and if you decide to. In fact, you can begin with as little as some metal clay, a piece of non-stick sheet, a plastic page/sheet protector from the office supply store, a 6"-8" piece of PVC pipe from the hardware store to use as a Clay Roller, a deck of playing cards for spacers, some olive oil, some water, an inexpensive Paint Brush, and a stainless steel knife, pastry scraper, or clay blade, plus found objects to use as shape cutters and textures. That way you can get your feet wet and see how you like working with it (and how well your pieces sell) without a big up-front investment.
You can add just one or two new items as you can afford them. If you find your pieces are selling well, then you may want to invest some of the profits to purchase additional tools that can help you produce pieces more quickly, efficiently or easily, or that will allow you to produce more complex pieces. I've written a series of metal clay articles ("lenses") on Squidoo, including one on recommended tools and supplies, that you might find helpful in deciding what to buy. I've also started a lens with reviews of some of my favorite metal clay-related products, including the Ultralite Beehive kiln. I've put links to them in the source area, below.
If you really get into metal clay, you eventually will want to buy a "real" kiln, which runs into a lot of money. But you can do a lot without it. Most small or medium-sized pieces can be fired with an inexpensive butane torch from the hardware or kitchen store. You can even torch-fire pieces with some CZ stones, assuming that your supplier tells you they are safe for torch-firing. (Not all CZs are.)
You can do even more with an Ultralite Beehive Kiln, which can be purchased with ceramic discs for firing metal clay for under $200. As a bonus, you can use the Ultralite for enameling, and it's also the best possible heat source for adding 24K gold foil accents using the keum-boo technique, which is fast and easy. You just need to buy the red brass inserts for the Ultralite that were designed for this purpose. (They're not expensive.)
Another consideration in terms of ROI is that pieces you create with metal clay can be truly one-of-a-kind. That can add appreciably to their perceived value, if you are targeting an audience that appreciates handcrafted artisan jewelry vs. mass-produced pieces. (If your target audience doesn't care about such things, then metal clay probably isn't the best choice of material, except perhaps for making one-of-a-kind models from which you can create a mold and cast identical replicas in quantity.)
