Found them with a bunch of early 1940's stuff made in Germany . ceramic like on the outside somekind of plastic like material on inside . angels, rabbits, ornate trim and other things . pretty thin , one sided , lots of detail .
REVISION: From your description, these sound like porcelain or ceramic. Since you said they're thin, I'll bet they're porcelain. The inside is probably very smooth.
Fred Bauer was a mid-20th century porcelain maker. There is also a Fred Bauer who was a baker in the early 20th century, who wrote a book on cake decorating (I remember reading a copy when I was in chef school).
You probably could use these to bake a cake, but they might be valuable; they might be display/collector items rather than practical items; and they may be worn and could crack if you use them.
I suggest you take photos of the molds and find some porcelain collectors online. Email them the photos and ask them if they can tell you anything about the cake molds.
I did find one place-- http://ceramicsmuseum.alfred.edu-- where they have information on ceramics. I even found a photo of a Fred Bauer piece. I'd send this place some pics and an email first. Their email is ceramicsmuseum@alfred.edu
Here are some general tips:
If the pans are cast iron, clean them with one of those nylon mesh scrubbers if they haven't been used in awhile. Dry them immediately, rub inside and out with shortening or oil, and bake at 350 degrees for an hour. You can CAREFULLY rub the pans with more shortening/oil 30 minutes into the heating, if you want. This seasons the pan and prevents rusting. From this point on, after using, clean only with water and a soft brush, and dry immediately, preferably in a warm oven.
If they are steel, wash them well in water and dry immediately. If they have rust spots, do your best to wipe them away with a towel before using the pans. The rust will diminish the quality of what is baked inside the pans, but if you oil and flour the pans well, and remove the cake immediately (within 15 minutes of baking), there will be minimal transfer of rust onto the cake.
Aluminum molds should only need washing and drying. They won't rust or corrode unless something strange comes in contact with them.
Since I don't know what you have, I will provide more general tips for using.
Use Pam with Flour or Baker's Joy to oil and flour the pans. This will help insure your cake comes out. You can grease and flour the pans yourself, but you'll get better results with Pam or a similar product. If your pan has a lid, be sure to oil and flour it too.
It's hard to give you specific guidelines on filling the pans, because I don't know how they fill. Fill the pan, or each part, 2/3 full. If it's a 2-part pan that you have to snap together, work quickly so the batter doesn't run out when you're putting the pieces together. I recommend using a thick cake batter for a mold, something homemade, like a traditional pound cake or a two-stage yellow or white cake (recipe below).
If the pan is cast iron, the cake will probably brown deeply and have a thick crust. It will require experimentation to find the right baking time. Probably 35 mins at 325 will be a good place to start, if the pan is steel or cast iron. If the pan is aluminum, you can increase the temp to 350. You will have to open the pan to test the cake with a toothpick at this point (don't even try to do it earlier). If the cake is almost done, complete baking with the lid or other piece removed.
Let the cake cool in the mold 10 minutes before removing completely. Here's a recipe for a two-stage cake. Easy to mix and good texture:
Rich and Tender Yellow Layer Cake
To quickly bring the eggs and milk to room temperature (65°F), submerge them in a bowl of warm water for about 10 minutes after mixing them together. Adding the butter pieces to the mixing bowl one at a time prevents the dry ingredients from flying up and out of the bowl.
Makes two 9-inch cakes
4 large eggs , room temperature
1/2 cup whole milk , room temperature
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 1/4 cups sifted cake flour
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon table salt
1/2 pound unsalted butter (2 sticks), softened (see illustration 1), each stick cut into 8 pieces
1. Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and heat oven to 350 degrees. Generously grease two 9-by-1 1/2-inch cake pans with vegetable shortening and cover pan bottoms with rounds of parchment paper or wax paper. Grease parchment rounds, dust cake pans with flour, and tap out excess.
2. Beat eggs, milk, and vanilla with fork in small bowl; measure out 1 cup of this mixture and set aside. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in bowl of standing mixer fitted with paddle attachment; mix on lowest speed to blend, about 30 seconds. With mixer still running at lowest speed, add butter one piece at a time; mix until butter and flour begin to clump together and look sandy and pebbly, with pieces about the size of peas, 30 to 40 seconds after all butter is added. Add reserved 1 cup of egg mixture and mix at lowest speed until incorporated, 5 to 10 seconds. Increase speed to medium-high (setting 6 on KitchenAid) and beat until light and fluffy, about 1 minute. Add remaining egg mixture (about 1/2 cup) in slow steady stream, about 30 seconds. Stop mixer and thoroughly scrape sides and bottom of bowl. Beat on medium-high until thoroughly combined and batter looks slightly curdled, about 15 seconds longer. (To mix using hand mixer, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in large bowl. Add butter pieces and cut into the flour mixture with a pastry blender. Add reserved 1 cup of egg mixture; beat with hand mixer at lowest speed until incorporated, 20 to 30 seconds. Increase speed to high, add remaining egg mixture, and beat until light and fluffy, about 1 minute. Stop mixer and thoroughly scrape sides and bottom of bowl. Beat at high speed 15 seconds longer.)
3. Divide batter equally between prepared cake pans; spread to sides of pan and smooth with rubber spatula. Bake until cake tops are light golden and skewer inserted in center comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes. (Cakes may mound slightly but will level when cooled.) Cool on rack 10 minutes. Run a knife around pan perimeter to loosen. Invert cake onto large plate, peel off parchment, and re-invert onto lightly greased rack. Cool completely before icing.
