A Tour Through Santa Barbara's Past (A Brief History) by D. SMith
Like any other city, state or country, Santa Barbara has memoires of its own. Being knowledgeable in the History of the place also known as the American Riviera is something you should at least consider when travelling to or planning to live there. This will give you an idea on how the town became a city that is fun-loving, diverse and contemporary today and hopefully will increase your appreciation of your stay.
The memoires starts with the occupation of California by Native Americans some 13,000 years ago. An evidence of this phenomenon is a skeleton that is believed to be the oldest in North America and was discovered only 30 miles off the coast of Santa Rosa Island.
The Native Americans made great history in and around the Santa Barbara coast but it came to be less dominant with the arrival of the Spaniards and the subsequent Christianization of the locals. However, the Spaniards were driven out when the Mexican War of Independence came about. This struggle resulted in the area becoming a part of Mexico of the past. Mexico would then relinquish its control of the area in 1848 when the United States claimed the territory in its victory in the Mexican-American war.
With the changing of the guards came the change in the townâs character. What was once a scenario epitomized by swirling clouds of dust past adobe houses and buildings in a lazy afternoon, the Gold Rush era came upon the town bringing boots on horsebacks by the thousands. The old âWild-Wild Westâ moniker seemed a perfect fit for the town from there on. Because it was a beautiful paradise to begin with, a group of people with more permanent intentions arrived and stayed. The final twist of fate came about in about 1851 when dusty trails that wind across the towns that had dead end roads started to fade away and was replaced by grids and grids of asphalt roads invented by the modern man as we know today.
There was mostly peace and tranquility as the Victorian period passed by. Then, World War I erupted and the city saw some increased activity in film making. Maybe this was brought about the artistic mementos found in the cityscape.
1925 saw the construction of the historic County Courthouse as well as the occurrence of an earthquake. This was an eventful couple of decades, 1920âs and 1930âs that is as in the 30âs, the cityâs port was attacked by a Japanese submarine and consequently, military activities went into a frenzy while the rest of the population evacuated. In the 40âs, residents slowly returned but somewhat hesitantly.
As of this writing, Santa Barbara has transformed into a cultural powerhouse, a sort of a hideaway for celebrities and politicians. It is where the former first couple, Ronald and Nancy Reagan owned a ranch and lived. It has found a niche in the tourist market and building on expanding its domain.
